Synthroid Levothyroxine Side Effects & Adverse Reactions

When it’s not working quite right, excessive sweating can be one of the first signs. The estimated background risk of major birth defects and miscarriage for the indicated population is unknown. All pregnancies have a background risk of birth defect, loss, or other adverse outcomes. In the U.S. general population, the estimated background risk of major birth defects and miscarriage in clinically recognized pregnancies is 2% to 4% and 15% to 20%, respectively. Monitor for cardiac arrhythmias during surgical procedures in patients with coronary artery disease receiving suppressive SYNTHROID therapy. Monitor patients receiving concomitant SYNTHROID and sympathomimetic agents for signs and symptoms of coronary insufficiency.

Such poor heat regulation, in combination with a hot climate or thick, nonbreathable clothing, can exacerbate sweating. Note that this list is not all-inclusive and includes only common medications that may interact with Synthroid. Treatment

• In patients on a stable and appropriate replacement dosage, evaluate clinical and biochemical response every 6 to 12 months and whenever there is a change in the patient’s clinical status.
• Providing a complete list of medications to the doctor will help with getting the correct dose established for each individual patient.
• Synthroid is a synthetic hormone that isn’t always well-tolerated by the body.

In euthyroid patients, doses within the range of daily hormonal requirements are ineffective for weight reduction. Larger doses may produce serious or even life-threatening manifestationsof toxicity, particularly when given in association with sympathomimetic amines such as those used for their anorectic effects. Synthroid is prescribed in tablets that range from 25 to 300 mcg in strength and is usually taken once a day with a full glass of water (about 8 ounces) 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast for best adsorption into the body. Children can take the medicine if the tablet is crushed and put into about 1 to 2 teaspoons of water; do not store or delay giving this crushed pill suspension. Doctors often may have to slowly increase the dose; patients should not increase or decrease this medication themselves. Because some preparations of the drug may contain iodine or lactose, patients should tell their doctors about such allergies or reactions to these components.

• Thyroid hormones, including SYNTHROID, either alone or with other therapeutic agents, should not be used for the treatment of obesity or for weight loss.
• Furthermore, it is necessary to consider that hot flashes may occur due to the fact that your body hasn’t fully adjusted to the drug.
• As mentioned above, these chemicals may increase TSH and perpetuate the autoimmune attack on the thyroid.

• It’s plausible that hypothyroidism and menopause share similar symptoms, and each condition may aggravate the other.
• Serum TSH levels should be monitored and the SYNTHROID dosage adjusted during pregnancy.
• When the thyroid gland is compromised, and hormone levels are off-balance, you can experience uncomfortable temperature-related symptoms.
• In some cases, mood swings may subside as the body continues to adapt to synthroid.

Medications that can cause night sweats

However, over- or under-activity of the thyroid can cause issues throughout the body. The majority of people living with hypothyroidism are women, most commonly diagnosed in middle age. The American Thyroid Association found that women are five to eight times more likely to develop hypothyroidism compared to men, which may suggest a hormonal link. Studies find that estrogen may have a direct effect on thyroid cell receptors.

If you’re several months into treatment, but are still experiencing severe nausea as a side effect, it is necessary to discuss with a medical professional. A loss of hair can take a toll on self-esteem, lead synthroid users to feel embarrassed about their appearance, and ultimately cause depression. Fortunately, hair loss is considered a transient side effect and should eventually subside by the fourth or fifth month of treatment. In some cases, it can take awhile for your body to fully adjust to synthroid and for the hair loss to subside. For most users, the dizziness subsides and/or improves within a week or two of treatment. Some speculate that improper dosage of synthroid and/or abnormal TSH levels may be the cause of dizziness.

Drug-Laboratory Test Interactions

Unfortunately, taking any medication on an empty stomach often increases propensity to experience stomach aches. Some individuals find that stomach aches diminish with continued, regular synthroid administration. Others may need to come to terms with the fact that mild stomach aches may always occur while using synthroid. While sleep may normalize after weeks (or months) of synthroid treatment, a hypnotic may be prescribed to ensure that sleep disturbances aren’t taking an additional toll on your health. You may also want to make lifestyle changes to ensure a healthy circadian rhythm. A subset of users report that after taking synthroid they don’t get enough quality sleep, while others report sleeping too much (oversleeping).

Synthroid side effects

If your TSH levels aren’t within an optimal range, it may not be the synthroid that is causing dry skin. However, if you synthroid vial never had dry skin prior to using synthroid and your TSH levels are within a normative range – the dry skin could be a side effect of your medication. Don’t suffer in silence; if you’re feeling unusually anxious, manic, or depressed after a few weeks on the meds, talk to your doctor. The bump that moves is the cartilage often called the Adam’s apple, and underneath that is where your thyroid sits. Your thyroid is basically the on-board computer for your body—the hormones it regulates affect almost every system and as long as it’s doing its job you forget it’s even there.

Assess the adequacy of therapy by periodic assessment of laboratory tests and clinical evaluation. The recommended starting daily dosage of SYNTHROID in adults with primary, secondary, or tertiary hypothyroidism is based on age and comorbid cardiac conditions, as described in Table 1. For patients at risk of atrial fibrillation or patients with underlying cardiac disease, start with a lower dosage and titrate the dosage more slowly to avoid exacerbation of cardiac symptoms.
